Pimp My Stroller

Here's a funny video starring Miles, produced by Sue-G and Sevtron. It's based on the tv show "pimp my ride"

My favorite parts are when Miles rips his hat off ("what the f** is this doing on my head?!) and at the end, when he's in his pimped-out stroller, check out how he's rolling with his arm off to the side like someoen driving a sweet ride and crusin' down the strip.

Winter Oregon Steelhead

Steelhead

Fishing for Winter steelhead is something I’ve read a lot about and it’s considered a “classic must-do” trip for serious fishermen. It’s the chance to brave the elements for elusive large rainbow trout that have migrated from freshwater rivers to the ocean where they get big eating on tons of food, then make their way back up the river to spawn. We fished the Sandy River which is formed by glacial runoff from Mt.Hood. The glacial origin gives the river a beautiful greenish tint which is further accented by the lush green ferns and tree moss that grow plentifully on the banks.

I was the only one of 3 anglers who caught a steelhead (or who caught any species of fish, for that matter, b/c we only caught 1 fish all day). It was a ~29” ~10 lb female, which the guide said is just a tad smaller than the avg size fish he sees in that river. We released the fish back into the wild after taking some photos. Our guide said that we’d be lucky to hook one fish all day, and even luckier to land one. So I’m glad to say we got on the board without getting skunked.

The fish itself was awesome. It fought with leaps and bounds, slashes and deep head tugs, and long runs into my reel’s backing for about 10 mins. The scenery was spectacular, the guide was great, and the weather turned out to be perfect: snowing early in the morning which made us feel all tough, heavy rain and hail mid-day to test our will (‘why are we doing this?!’), and partly cloudy with occasional sun spots in the afternoon to reward us for enduring the cold.

Our guide, Marty, was excellent. He navigated some hairy rapids where the river charged through a rugged canyon, and he had a deep knowledge of the Sandy and where the fish were. He grew up bait fishing on the Sandy and eventually decided to give fly fishing a try about 17 years ago and never looked back.

It’s funny, there is definitely a tension between fly fishermen and bait slingers, and I’ve never seen it more pronounced than on that float. Something about steelhead fishermen’s state of mind causes this distinct rift between live bait and fly. About a quarter mile into the float I looked to shore and noticed that someone, clearly a bait fisherman, had written in the sand in large letters: “NO FLY FAGS!!”

I almost fell out of the boat with laughter. That was perfect. I personally don’t care what people use to catch fish (short of dynamite)…the fact that they’re out there on the river enjoying the day is really all that matters to me. But I do get a kick out of people who take things so seriously. And this message in the sand just framed it perfectly for me.

We saw 4 other fishermen all day, 3 fly fishermen and 1 bait guy. The bait guy practically gave us the finger when we waved to him…just turned away and put his hands on his hips until we floated by. It was a funny display of river drama.

Our guide insisted we fish with “spey rods.” A spey rod is a very long flyrod that you cast with two hands. The one I was using was 16' long, compared to a typical fly rod of ~9'. The guide taught me basic spey casting techniques which is a popular method for steelheading in the NW (not so much in CA where nymphing seems to be popular, but def OR and WA). Spey casting is the oldest form of fly fishing...it's what the Scottish invented back in the 16th or 17th century. The basic physics behind spey casting is the classic “roll cast” which most people learn early in their fly casting careers. The length and power of the spey rod allows you to roll cast long distances and makes for very efficient fishing b/c there is no false casting, so by definition your fly is in the water longer and we all know you have a higher chance of catching fish the longer your fly is in the water.

The Big Brown Trout

Bigbrown

This 30" brown trout was caught on the Bow River outside Calgary, Alberta. It was caught (and released back into the river without injury) with a large streamer fly stripped in a deep undercut bank. The guide was flabbergasted when we netted the fish (dad, nice job on the net!) b/c he had never, in his 15 years guiding on that river, seen a fish that big. The local paper said it was the largest brown trout caught on the Bow River with a fly rod. I don't know if I believe that, but I'll take the credit! It was the trout of a lifetime for me.
